Inkwell Journal had its start in 1995 through students, alumni, faculty, and friends of the Manhattanville College program in creative writing who thought that part of our mission should be to provide a venue for emerging and underrepresented voices. On relaunching the journal with Issue 33, Lori Soderlind wrote:

Inkwell Journal was for 32 issues over 16 years a proud part of a literary world that asks us to slow down and read... There are those who say that print media is going the way of the dinosaur, but I disagree, and so do the students and alumni of the Manhattanville College MFA program who, while pleased to see our program create an online journal, all have come to believe that without a journal in print, something important was missing--something tangible and lasting, something full of ideas that also takes up space in the world.”
